The
polarimeter POL-1 is a robust device ideal for simple laboratorial applications,
whether for education or for training. The polarimeter POL-1 is designed to measure the
concentration of chiral substances (e.g. sugar) in solutions.
Polarimetry is a method to analyze the purity of a solution and to determine its
concentration of chiral substances, such as glucose, fructose, saccharine
e.g. in the sugar industry, creamery, wine industry, beverage and fruit
industry. The polarimeter POL-1 can also be applied in wine laboratories, or for
the analysis of admixtures in food, in medicine to determine the amount of sugar
and albumin in urine, in the cosmetics industry to test chiral essential
oils and fragrances. The monochrome light source emits light of the Fraunhofer
sodium-D-line with a 589 nm wave length. The polarimeter POL-1 has an open pitch
circle of ±180°
with a subdivision in integer angular degrees and consists of two Nicol prisms.
The fixed polarizer polarizes light coming from the illuminant in a linear
order. The rotatable analyzer that is placed behind the polarizer ensures
defining the position of the polarization layer. The polarimeter POL-1 follows
Laurent's half-shade method. It can hold tubes with a maximum length of 200 mm.
The polarimeter is ideal to set foot in the field of polarimetry and gather
initial experiences. If there are any questions about this polarimeter
POL-1, please have a look at the technical specification

other products in terms of regulation
and control, or scales
and balances of PCE

Due
to two sequenced polarizers - the second one is called analyzer - the
following effects can be observed:
|
-
Analyzer
is placed in same angle as polarizer: light can transmit and the
polarization plane is preserved.
-
Analyzer
is in a 90° angle to polarizer: light can not pass through, the field
appears to be dark.
-
Polarizer and analyzer placed in a 90 ° angle again, a substance is
applied, which changes the light polarization plane (so called chiral
substance), so that the electronic field vector is rotated into a certain
angle. The analyzer must be further rotated, in order to reach the dark spot
again. The merit of this rotation is a characteristic constant (rotating
angle), which is used for the analysis of the substance, in order to
determine it, and its purity and concentration.
|
Nowadays
there are many known chiral substances (either natural
or synthesized) that are able to rotate the light polarization plane.
Important examples are:
|
- Sugar (saccharine)
- Some natural crystals, such as quartz, calc
spar CaCO3, cinnabar, sodium chlorate
- Liquid crystals for displays
- Many chemical solutions that are chiral
(i.e. they have two "mirror"-enantiomers) and play an important
role in areas of medicine and food, e.g. ascorbic acid (vitamin C),
Citalopram (anti-depressives)
