Sterile Technology Sterile technology is indispensable in medical fields. Sterilisation and disinfection are procedures in which devices and materials are freed of microorganisms. Sterilisation is especially important and needed in medical practices and hospitals, where immunodeficient people can be exposed to germs. In order to prevent a contamination, certain guidelines and sanitary regulations – which include an extensive sterilisation – must be abided by. When materials and objects are sterilised, the best case scenario is that all viruses, spores and germs are killed. Unfortunately, this is not always possible in practise because some germs are very resistant and tenacious. Sterile technology is applied when simple disinfection no longer guarantees sterility. Sterile technology can be applied via thermal or chemical procedures. For this purpose, various apparatuses and devices are available with which sterilisation can be optimally conducted. The difficulty is to design devices that can quantitatively prove sterility. One such device is a laboratory autoclave. Here, water is heated and the emerging steam pushes aside the air. Furthermore, there is steam pressure sterile technology. This is usually conducted at a temperature of 121 °C and a vapour pressure of 2 bars. After 15-20 minutes, all microorganisms are killed via sterilisation. Bacteria and microorganisms are not only found on materials and objects but also in the air. Therefore, the air must be sterilised as well. Special exhaust systems are used for this in medical fields. Many such systems ensure our health and the healthiness of our environment. Mass-epidemics and contagion can thereby be prevented. Another application area is not in medicine but in food processing. Tinned food and packaging – both of which come into direct contact with food – are sprayed with antiseptics to kill such bacteria that may possibly have developed during production. Not only humans are protected from bacteria. An early decay of the food can also be prevented via sterile technique.
