Noise in the workplace / Selecting the appropriate sound level meters |
Working with noise
Noise is dangerous to a certain level equivalent to 90 dB (A) (Leq). The measurement period is 8 hours a day (one shift). Over 85 dB (A) damage in the ear can be
produced. According to current research, the revision of the inner ear depends on the noise level, and it is given as equivalent level (Leq) in dB (A). To measure sound level meters LEQ sound meters are used. Auditory acuity can be affected and other psychological functions that can lead to hearing loss can be produced by noise produced by machines.
Sound Level Meters
To meet the requirements of volume level / noise in the workplace, it is necessary to check both the noise level during a working period as the personal sound dose as. This is done using sound level meters with data memory and real time clock. Workers can wear the sound level meter with them and measure the sound charge stored for 8 hours (90 dB for 8 hours = 100% sound-dose). Sound measurement values can be read and then represented in the PC. From the measurement data, measures or steps can be taken to muffle the sound and thus protect the worker.
To measure the noise in the industrial sector, Class II sound level meters can be used. These portable sound level meters allow accurate measurement of noise on the machines room and the subsequent recording of data. The sound level meters with data loggers are the best equipment for the identification and documentation of noise in the start-up, operation and stop of machines. These class II sound level meters are also recommended for approval of new machines.
To make noise measurements for judicial use , calibrated sound level meter must be used (class I). Class II devices are also accepted, since these sound level meters can document the noise levels exceeded with a high accuracy of ± 1.5 dB. They are almost always taken as the base on internal or private noise measurements that can be used in trials such as those carried out through a judicial supervisory body (eg, arguments with neighbors or tenants.) This will prevent the acquisition of expensive sound level meters of class I.
