determination of viscosity by means of flow-cup

Flow-cups
are still the most important checking devices for quick detection of the
viscosity of fluids in laboratory or production. But these flow-cups are only
applicable at low-viscosity fluids, not at high viscosity substances like paste
etc. The most accurate results are analyzing while examining Newtonian fluids.
Therefore the flow-cups can only hold a certain fluid volume that
afterwards leaks through a small hole. The result is described as the time in
seconds that a fluid needs until the appearance of irregular flow behavior. For
many applications it is not necessary to determine the absolute viscosity of
paints and lacquer. Often the flow time, measured in seconds, is mostly
sufficient for a relative classification, which is often determined due to
different models of flow-cups. The flow-cup is a hollow cylinder ending in a
fixed cone. To catch the spare fluid there is an overflow gutter integrated. In
general the flow-cups are mostly built of anodized aluminium while the cone is
made of stainless steel mostly. Different constructions and types of flow-cups
are purchasable, depending on test fluid and demanded standardization. Many
models can be ordered in out shop (Ford, ISO, Anfor). For further
information about the flow-cup, please read the

Measuring
principle
The determination of viscosity is performed via the time in seconds, in which a
predetermined fluid volume flows through a cone of the flow-cup.
|
Procedure
of Checking
In general the checking procedure is described as following:
- Level circular bubble with stand
- Hand flow-cup into stand or tempering coat
- Seal cone at flow-cup
- Fill with fluid
- Remove spare material with a glass plate and seal cup with the glass plate
- Open cone
- Remove glass plate and start immediately chronometer
- Stop time immediately at first
tearing of fluid jet and note time
|
Further details are described in various standardizations. Please consider regarding the flow time that the flow-cups are
only analyzed and calibrated for that range.
Measure the temperature at leaking jet since only there the actual temperature
of the fluid can be determined. Comparable and reproducible results are only
achievable due to consistent temperature checking.
|
Maintenance
and care
After performed
measurement flow-cup and especially the cone have to be cleaned carefully whilst
no hard or sharp objects should be used.
|
Attention:
Lacquer remainder in the cone a size accuracy and thus a measuring accuracy is
not guaranteed anymore.
