Cable
Length Meters The cable length
meters of PCE instruments provide various functions that can be useful in terms
of measuring the length of cables or detecting cable breaks. Therefore the cable
length meters function according to various measuring principles that will be
described below. Using these devices enables determining cable lengths as well
as the resistance and caliber of cables that are about to be laid or even
already laid. Depending on the device that is being used, you can measure the
length of cables to certain extends. Also the measuring ranges differ among the
the devices. The cable length meters are applicable in different areas including
industry, crafting, retails of electronics. Basically
anywhere the length and quality of the cable needs to be measured. For some
devices, there are electronic software's that can be downloaded from the
internet for free. Those allow visualizing the collected data afterwards. These
software's are not mandatory in order to operate with the cable length meters,
since they often feature an internal data storage, that allows storing a major
amount of the collected data. In order to maintain the predetermined accuracy of
those cable length meters, we recommend a regularly performed recalibration of
those devices. Therefore the information is given in the data sheets of the
relevant cable length meters or mentioned in the instruction manual. If you have questions about the photometers, you can contact us at: UK customers +44(0) 23 809 870 30 / US customers (561) 320-9162 . Our technicians and engineers will be happy to advise you on these and other photometers, and of course, on the other products of our range (regulation and control, scales and balances.).

Some
of our cable length meters feature an option for temperature compensation since
the temperature indirectly effects the relevant wire. In order to now perform an
exact and reliable measurement by means of the cable length meters the
temperature needs to be compensated first. That can be performed with a variety
of methods. The cable length meters for once feature an integrated temperature
compensation. Therefore the temperature is measured by an internal sensor of the
cable length meters. Thus the collected temperature will be incorporated into
the calculation of length and caliber of the relevant cable. To get the cable
length meters adjusted to the temperature, it is necessary to place the device
for at least two hours near the wire that needs to be measured. In addition to
that, there is also the option to perform an external temperature compensation,
which is performed via a quadrature loop. The third option is to set the
temperature compensation manually. Therefore the surrounding temperature of the
wire is set by the user. The feed-in can be set in 1 °C steps.
Difference between a cable meter and an echometer:
There are certain point that differ the cable length meters from one another,
even if the devices appear the same at first. Both allow measuring the cable
length, but the measuring principle is different. The cable meter must be
connected with both ends of the lines first, before the measurement is
performed. The advantage of using cable meters is that it can be also used for
single-wired cables. The echometer is only connected to one end of the cable,
but it the cable needs to be at least double-wired.
